Women drivers are being ripped off by female-only motor insurers, price comparison site moneysupermarket.com claimed this week.
The average premium charged by female-only brands such as Sheila’s Wheels and Diamond is £733, more expensive than many standard providers.
“Going down the specialist insurer route may not be the best option,” said Steve Sweeney, moneysupermarket.com head of motor insurance.
A small number of drivers will find cheaper deals with specialist insurers, but most motorists should avoid them, Sweeney claimed.
“These brands market themselves to be the cheaper alternatives for the likes of older drivers and women, and while this is true for some drivers, for others this is not the case,” he said.
“While specialist insurers do offer added benefits, such as handbag cover and priority assistance in emergencies on women-only policies, I would advise Brits to weigh up whether these additions are actually worth the extra money.”
In related news, research by moneysupermarket.com found that motorists could save an average of £157 by shopping around for the cheapest insurance.
